VISIT & SUPPORT THE STEVE BIKO INSTITUTE
"The Steve Biko Institute in Salvador, the capital of Bahia state, aims
to help Black Brazilians achieve what many never dared to dream of - to
enter university." Named after the revolutionary leader Steve Biko who fought against apartheid in South Africa, the institute seeks to arm and equip students "to use education as a weapon against oppression." On our journey you will have a chance to visit, meet with and support this largely independent Afro-Brazilian institution. CLICK HERE TO READ ARTICLE AND SEE VIDEO ABOUT THE INSTITUTE!

CACHOEIRA TOUR
Our tour into the interior of Bahia takes us through beautiful country sides and rural towns which have existed for several hundred
years. Inhabitants
still ride horses and donkeys to the market, and live primarily off the
land.
Our goal is to reach the town of Cachoeira, one of the most important
historical and colonial towns in Bahia. While in Cahoeira, we will make a special visit to the Sisterhood of the Good Death
Church. This church is the oldest (240 years) and the most
important Afro-Bahian Woman's Organization in Brazil.

ISLAND TOUR
We leave the city harbor on a safe and
comfortable schooner with a professional pilot, bartenders and servers. Our first stop will be Priest Island,
a stunning tropical paradise where one can swim, snorkel, sun bathe, stroll
along the sandy beaches, or purchase shells, coral, or other handicrafts
made by local merchants. After two hours at Priest Island, we reboard
our schooner, set sail for Itaparica Island, and enjoy a delicious
lunch, fun and tropical relaxation under the Bahian sun.

The State of Bahia has the longest coastline in Brazil - approximately
700 miles of sandy beaches, outlined by magnificent tropical vegetation. Our journey will
take us past coconut trees, fruit trees, and other tropical vegetation, until we reach a a unique village started in the 1960's. This fantastic

running water, electricity or other amenities found in urban areas. This
village contains masterful artists and
craftsmen who create wonderful art objects. Later we will
visit a secluded beach where you can swim or enjoy some of the
best seafood in Brazil, such as delicious lobster, red snapper,

  | FREE DAYS
During your free days you will have the opportunity to relax by the beach, shop in the markets, explore the town, mingle with the people or venture off to study any aspect of Afro-Brazilian culture that interests you. Many of you may be interested in Capoeira Angola: a African-Brazilian cultural art
form created by Africans enslaved in Brazil, as a method of
emancipation. Capoeira has roots in the Bantu tradition and was used by
enslaved Africans to combat the colonial oppression of the Portuguese
rulers. Capoeira Angola combines culture, philosophy, martial arts,
dance, ritual, and music into a fluid, graceful game of wit and skill. Whatever you choose you set your itinerary on these days and we'll be close behind to serve you as needed.
